Elie Wiesel Political Action Pinback Button
3Elie Wiesel was a writer, professor, political activist, and Holocaust survivor. Among his 57 books, Night was based on his experiences as a Jewish prisoner in the Auschwitz and Buchenwald concentration camps. Throughout his life, he campaigned for victims of oppression and genocide in places like South Africa, Nicaragua and Sudan, and he was a strong defender of human rights. When Wiesel was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986, the Norwegian Nobel Committee said that through "his own personal experience of total humiliation and of the utter contempt for humanity shown in Hitler's death camps," as well as his "practical work in the cause of peace," Wiesel had delivered a message "of peace, atonement and human dignity."
